Tongli as one of the most famous Watertowns and usually worth a visit, is recommended to be avoided during Holiday times like Chinese New Year (as we chose) as a guessed 3 Million others have the same idea at the same day. All you will be able to see is black heads around you and your kids will keep an unforgettable butt-day in their memories as they’ll see nothing else than those… so better to have a well facilitated hotel and enjoy the time there instead…

Skip Tiger Hill and the Humble Administrator's Garden.
Skip Tiger Hill and the Humble Administrator's Garden. Instead, head to the North Temple Pagoda, Panmen Scenic Area and the Chongyuan Temple for the best sites in Suzhou.
If you like shopping, the mall under the Gate to the East building is great and is also full of restaurants.

Great City, with old antique areas and modern sites - vivid and harmonious at the same time
.... one of the jewels in China, for sure! Must go!
Don't miss out the ancient towns of Tongli, Zhouzhuang, Luzhi & Jinxi in the greater Suzhou area. Aside the ancient city center of Suzhou and the Pingang Jie area, They are all worth a visit of min. 1 day.

I would like to visit again on holiday.
The biggest problem was when Google cut off and I couldn't use my phone except for WhatsApps only. It was frustrating.

Suzhou is the "Venice" of China.
Suzhou is the "Venice" of China. Like many places in China it has much history and beauty. Had we the time, a walk along one of the main canals would have been great. Suffice to say we took a "gondola" ride and yes, the "gondolier" sang (a little). Tiger Hill and the Humble Administrator's Garden is worth the visit.

For this trip, we split our time between going and seeing...
For this trip, we split our time between going and seeing sights and taking it easy in and around the two hotels we stayed in. Suzhou turned out to be a good option on both counts.
If you want to get around, public transport, as in most large Chinese cities, is great and convenient. Even though it was National Week, most of the times we went out, it wasn't too crowded (which is saying something).
We didn't try to go to all of the gardens, water towns and sights, but had a good time at the ones we went to. In fact, based on our experience and what I've read from other reviews, I'd recommend picking one water town (we had a nice time and also enjoyed the show in Zhouzhuang) and one garden (I don't remember the name of the one we went to at the moment, but I think most are good and similar to each other), and at least go downtown to see the 'pants' building and walk along the lake to enjoy the lights and the city's skyline at night. I wanted to ride on the ferris wheel, but apparently that area was closed for remodeling or something while we were there.
I thought a dinner cruise might be nice, but we couldn't find one. However, there were quite a few good restaurants, western and local, that we enjoyed. Food-wise, at the very least you should try the húntún (馄饨), which are basically the Jiangsu variety of dumplings, available at many local restaurants, and can be ordered wet (in soup) or dry (not in soup).
Charming Guesthouse in the heart of Suzhou located in a quiet side road. Perfect location - you can walk to most of the sites. Lovely and very helpful host that helped us with all the logistics (as we don’t speak Chinese and didn’t have some of the essential Apps on our phone…), recommended a great restaurant for vegetarians and let us do a late check-out :) Although no breakfast is served you can sit down in the garden or cute living room and have some tea and coffee.
One of the best hotels I've stayed!
The amazing design of the building, outstanding service from all staffs (from the doorman to the IT manager), the view of our room, the variety of breakfast... literally everything!
Check-in and out went very smooth. Miss Zuo & Miss Pan at the front desk were very friendly and helpful. I can see they really like their job and feel proud of it.
Will definitely come back!
The location of this hostel was spot on: in the old town, very central, and yet quiet at night. Also, it is only 10 minutes away on foot to the metro station so it can be easily reached from the Suzhou railway station. The hostel itself is cute, with traditional architecture and a nice inner garden. The room was clean and luminous, but not very spacious.
Great location close to Pingjiang Road, the hosts were very welcoming and gave us plenty of advice and recommendations. We got upgraded from a double bed room to a suite, which was very comfortable and clean. Great stay, we will come back and recommend this hotel to our friends!
I’ve loved my stay here! This place is so cool and artsy, but also cosy. The staff is great and super helpful. The rooms are huge, full of amenities. It’s very nice to have the experience of staying at a guesthouse, instead of the hotels readily available in China.
the front desk staff Rick Zhang if i remember correctly, was very friendly and shown his hospilatity with his professional attitude. if the breakfast could be improved a little that will be great. Generally, it was a nice stay in this hotel.
The hotel was absolutely beautiful and it was connected to Pan Men, so access to it was free for hotel guests. Location was central and walking distance to the Nan Men metro.
Clean room, functional corner with a fridge and tea kettle. Polite service. I had better breakfasts in many other hotels, but this issue does not affect the rating.
